Under general supervision of a Professional Engineer, successful candidate will perform environmental engineering work related to wastewater disposal, onsite septic systems, public water supply systems, livestock waste control facilities or other environmental programs as necessary.  The successful candidate will apply sound engineering principles and judgments in reviewing plans and proposals, assuring that regulatory requirements are met.  The successful candidate will need to demonstrate strong communication and customer service skills to foster effective working relationships with customers.

*Hourly Hiring rate of position:  Environmental Engineer I  = $23.979

                                                      Environmental Engineer II = $24.814

*Hiring classification dependent upon selected applicant's qualifications and experience

Under general supervision of a Professional Engineer, reviews engineering plans and specifications for wastewater disposal systems, onsite septic systems, livestock waste control facilities and public water supply systems or other environmental programs as necessary.  

·         Reviews facility plans, plans and specifications, construction, operational plans, operator training, and/or operation of water supply systems, wastewater treatment plants, onsite septic systems, and/or other equipment/facilities as requested to determine compliance with State and federal laws, regulations, and policies.

·         Works with consulting engineers to obtain appropriate information necessary to conduct evaluation.

·         Conducts on-site inspection of assigned equipment and/or facilities to determine compliance of the systems with approved plans and specifications and with State and federal requirements.

·         Compiles statistics, charts and tables of findings, interprets findings, and prepares reports or correspondence to present findings to agency staff, consulting engineers, and owners/operators of facilities.

·         Confers with and provides technical assistance to local boards of health, municipal officials, industrial officials, consulting engineers, and the general public to alleviate environmental hazards and/or eliminate health hazards.

·         Collects samples and specimens in the field for laboratory analysis and interprets laboratory analysis.

·         Conducts or assists in training programs for water and wastewater treatment plant operators.

·         Presents talks to lay and professional groups.

·         Attends meetings of associations and organizations concerned with environmental and/or health issues as a representative of the agency.

Environmental Engineer I - Bachelor's degree in civil, mechanical, chemical, environmental or agricultural engineering.

OR

Environmental Engineer II - Bachelor's degree in civil, mechanical, chemical, environmental or agricultural engineering plus two year’s experience in environmental engineering work; OR Master's degree in civil, mechanical, chemical, environmental or agricultural engineering plus one year experience in environmental engineering work.  Registration as a professional engineer may substitute for two years of the experience requirement.  Ability to attain Fundamentals in Engineering (FE) certification within one year of hire.

Other: 

Valid driver’s license or the ability to provide independent transportation: Ability to travel with occasional overnight travel.  Ability to climb slopes, walk on uneven terrains and walk long distances. Regular and reliable attendance

Preference: Possesses a Fundamentals in engineering certification.

Knowledge of: engineering principles related to public water supplies and wastewater disposal; word processing, spreadsheet, and database management computer software.

Skill in: gathering, interpreting and analyzing information, communicating with individuals and groups with varying technical backgrounds to collect and relay information; listening to and understanding others; prioritizing workloads; using analytical judgment to make decisions; public speaking and conducting presentations.

Ability to: learn and apply local, State and federal environmental laws, regulations and standards; learn, apply and uphold agency policies and procedures; establish and maintain effective working relationships with public and private officials and general public; read and interpret topographic and geologic maps and engineering drawings; organize, analyze, and interpret data to draw conclusions and write reports; write and prepare technical papers and reports; use computers and other tools for data storage and analysis.
