Project Name: Management Planning for Safer Source Water

- Implement source water protecting practices through soil sampling of yards before fertilization occurs. Purchase moisture sensors for lawns to help schedule lawn watering more efficiently.
- Purchasing of sprinkler timers, specifically ones that allow a rain sensor to be installed for better water management practices.
- Purchase hose bib timers for the citizens that do not have underground sprinkler system to help eliminate the “turn it on and forget it” method of watering.
- Educate 100+ people in the WHPA on better lawn care methods and conservation through projects implemented through this grant.
- Grid sampling for nutrients on production ground found in the WHPA, followed by the use of variable rate fertilizer application. Also implement the use of moisture sensors and Evaporation Transpiration (ET) gauge for irrigation scheduling.
- Deep soil sampling of 11 spots up to 50 feet in depth inside the Wellhead Protection Area.
Project Name: Protecting Source Water through Management Planning
Project Sponsor: Village of Grafton

- Educate one half (½) of the people in the WHPA with new technology and procedures of water saving devices and methods.
- Purchase sprinkler timers, rain sensors and moisture sensors for lawns in town to help reduce water use and possible contamination that enters groundwater.
- Work with producers in the wellhead protection area to reduce water use by using moisture sensors for irrigation scheduling and grid sampling for better application of fertilizer.
- Take 12 Deep soil samples in the WHPA up to 30 feet in Depth. This will give Grafton a soil profile, which is the bases for projects success and what sort of impact to expect in the future from their recharge area.
Project Name: Hay Springs Source Water Protection Project
Project Sponsor: Village of Hay Springs

- Provide a cost-share program to residents on water saving devices such as low flow shower heads, sink faucet aerators, low flow toilets, and lawn sprinkler rain sensors.
- Installing meters on village-owned properties such as the city park, fire department building and swimming pool.
- Work with agricultural landowners by cost sharing meters for center pivots
- Perform soil analysis to determine sources of nitrates.
- Improve source water security by installing fencing around the village’s water supply wells.
- Develop informational materials that will be mailed to residents in the community and landowners in the wellhead protection area.

- Implement source water protecting practices through McCool Jct. with help from the McCool Jct. FFA.
- Purchasing water timers that allow a rain sensor to be installed for better water management practices. Also to educate 150+ people in the WHPA on better lawn care methods and conservation methods through Brochures, classes and demonstrations of methods assisted by the McCool Junction FFA and York County Extension Educator.
- Purchasing moisture sensors for better irrigation scheduling on production ground.
- Four-acre grid soil sampling for nutrients before fertilizer application on production ground.
- Water sampling of irrigation wells taken by the local farmers and analysis done by the Upper Big Blue NRD.
- Deep soil sampling in the top 30 feet of the soil profile on 12 areas throughout the Wellhead Protection Area done by the Upper Big Blue NRD.
Project Name: Cash for Grass
Project Sponsor: Upper Niobrara White Natural Resources District

- Implement water conservation through directly funding the installation of residential buffalograss lawn projects and xeriscape workshops in the Upper Niobrara White Natural Resources District.
Project Name: Wilber Water Quality Protection Project
Project Sponsor: Village of Wilber

- Install 5 irrigation flow meters on irrigations wells in the Wilber wellhead area.
- Perform deep nitrate soil sampling to better manage nitrogen application rates for dryland and irrigated grain crops.
- Provide an educational meeting to foster the implementation of best management water quality practices and to educate the public on available cost share programs. 4. Farmers in the wellhead area will install up to 50 more irrigation sensors with 10 irrigation data loggers. ET gages will be expanded from 1 in the Wellhead area to 5 more.
- Expand GIS information and use this information on mapping adopted practices in the Wilber Wellhead area and within the city limits. Hold training for beginning users with Arcview and Trimble GIS units. An accurate GIS unit is needed for this portion on the project.
