Site Summary:
Riteway 81 service is located on Highway 81 approximately five miles northwest of Columbus, Nebraska. The present glass repair shop was formerly a restaurant that also sold gasoline from the 1950's to the 1990's. The site was sold to its current owner in the mid-1990's and is currently used as a glass repair shop and a used auto sales lot. Five UST's were removed from the site in 1990 indicating the presence of petroleum in the soils. No public water is available in the area. Private wells serve all business and private properties in the area. The Department of Roads to date has not granted NDEQ permission to access the median of the highway for monitoring or remediation wells. As a result, a slightly limited area for cleanup will be required, see map. |

Site Specifications:
1. Methylene Chloride is present in the groundwater at this site. A NPDES permit will be required if groundwater is discharged containing any Methylene Chloride. The NPDES permit discharge maximum is 16,000 PPB if the discharge water is not going to a drinking water source. If it is discharged to a drinking water source, then the maximum concentration will be 5 PPB. As permit processing time is uncertain, the Department will suspend the time requirement in the contract for the amount of time between permit application and permit issuance. If you have further questions about permitting under the NPDES program, please call Ron Asch at (402) 471-2188 or Jim Yeggy at (402) 471-2023.
2. NDEQ has been unsuccessful in obtaining right of way permission for well installation from the Department of Roads (DOR). Therefore, plume remediation will only be required west/southwest of the red line drawn on the benzene dissolved contaminant map. Monitor wells 5 and 10 will be used for SSTLs, but no verification wells will be drilled east/northeast of the red line. The specific language from DOR is: "no wells may be drilled inside a 30 foot area that extends out and runs parallel from the white line that runs along the outside lane of the highway."
3. This site is not a good candidate for overexcavation, and the property owner does not want the site remediated by this method.
4. The land owner's preference for the location of a remediation shed (if any) will be near RW-1
5. Only existing concrete that is destroyed during construction will have to be replaced.
6. All existing light fixtures such as one located on the old pump island are to remain.
7. The property owner does want a call any time a prospective contractor is to be on site. Please call him direct to arrange a time.
