Emerging Risks/Issues:
  • Sources of air emissions in Nebraska will need to report their annual emissions for 2019 using a new online application system called SLEIS – State and Local Emissions Inventory System.  The Air Division is conducting extensive outreach to sources, with a webinar scheduled for Nov. 18.  Detailed guidance regarding the new application system, including a series of video tutorials, is also posted on NDEE’s website.  Annual reports must be submitted electronically by March 31, 2020.
  • Review of the 2020 Litter Reduction and Recycling and Waste Reduction and Recycling Incentive grant applications has been completed and sent to an NDEE panel for ranking and scoring.  Final rankings and award decisions will be made in early December.

Accomplishments:
  • NDEE’s Remediation Section is addressing former USDA grain bin sites. This includes development of an overall prioritization strategy for investigation and cleanup of over 300 former sites in the state, evaluation of 30 high priority sites for potential vapor intrusion in residential structures built on former site locations, providing oversight in the Voluntary Cleanup Program on six active sites, and conducting a Superfund investigation on a former site in Aurora.
  • NDEE and its partners hosted two energy-related events: the 2019 Power Summit and the 12th Annual Nebraska Wind and Solar Conference. The Power Summit on Oct. 17 discussed implementing environmental regulations with the power generating industry and the Wind and Solar conference on Oct. 29-30 featured speakers from the wind and solar industries.
