January 2023 Monthly Metrics

NDEE produces a monthly metrics report to measure what the agency has accomplished; to set annual and longer-term goals; and to examine these goals against accomplishments to ensure continuous process improvements.

Accomplishments
  • The State Revolving Fund Section announced it is accepting applications from January through March 31 for the Private Well Reverse Osmosis Rebate Program. This program will provide $1.2 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds for private well owners to add a reverse osmosis water treatment system to reduce nitrate in drinking water.
  • The Superfund Section coordinated with the EPA to reduce the frequency of groundwater sampling from semi-annual to annual at the Ogallala OU-2 site. NDEE took over this Superfund site in 2016 and pays 100% of the operation and maintenance cost. This reduced sampling will result in a cost savings of nearly $8,000/year.

Miscellaneous
  • The Drinking Water Monitoring and Compliance Section has initiated a voluntary per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) screening for community water systems under 3,300 in population. Funding for this screening comes from Federal Public Water Supply Grants Emerging Contaminants funds and the State Revolving Fund 15% set-aside. The EPA is providing funding for communities between 3,300 and 10,000 in population to screen for PFAS. NDEE expects its screening project to be completed by June.
  • The Air Permitting programs have six active permit applications for carbon sequestration, including a methane capture project at a dairy operation and capturing CO2 from ethanol facilities. These permits are from CO2 gas conditioning facilities. These projects may require additional air and wastewater permits, but no additional permit applications have been submitted to NDEE.
  • The NPDES & State Permits Section plans to public notice the Confined Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) General Permit for a second time in February.
