Emerging Risks/Issues:
- NDEE continues work on the first phase of the Nebraska State Energy Plan. Phase I reflects the Energy Office’s annual report, and includes information from a survey conducted to assess Nebraskans’ energy priorities. The survey will also guide Phase II of the plan, which will be updated on a continuous basis with information on emerging energy topics and issues.
Accomplishments:
- NDEE received a large response after announcing availability of rebates for new electric vehicle (EV) charging equipment, which is funded through the Volkswagen Diesel Emissions Environmental Mitigation Trust. By the Nov. 15 deadline, NDEE had received 53 applications for 61 charging sites, totaling $3.8 million. Approximately $1.2 million is currently available for EV charging equipment. A team was formed to assist in ranking the applications, and final decisions are expected to be announced in December.
- Petroleum cleanup aspects in the Lincoln Haymarket area have been completed. Free product was discovered in 1986 and remediation has been taking place since 1988, which the City of Lincoln voluntarily overtook in 2010 to expedite development. The project is now going through the public notice process.
Misc. Items of Note:
- The Nebraska Association of Resources Districts and Nebraska Recycling Council met on Nov. 21 to discuss the potential for grain bag collection pilots in July 2020 and coordinating statewide collection events in July 2021. In March, the Lower Republican NRD hosted a free grain bag collection service, which resulted in about 300,000 lbs. collected despite weather complications. This joint effort diverts unwieldy bags weighing hundreds of pounds from local landfills, and the bags are instead recycled into consumer products.
