The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality (NDEQ) proposes to reissue with change the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit for the State of Nebraska Department of Correctional Services, Nebraska State Penitentiary, 4201 South 14th St., Lincoln, NE (NPDES# NE0113565; SIC 9223). The correctional facility employs a coal fired, steam electric generator to provide electrical power to the correctional facility during periods of peak demand and during power outages. The facility discharges coal pile runoff wastewater to a lagoon holding cell which discharges through Outfall 001 to a tributary of Beal Slough, segment LP2-21500 in the Lower Platte River Basin. The permit would be issued for a period of up to five years and would restrict pollutant discharges to comply with the requirements of Department regulations. The draft permit, fact sheet and other public information are available for review at NDEQ’s Lincoln Office (address below) between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. weekdays, excluding holidays.
