Dec. 3 Hearing in Mead on Compost Site Proposed Changes

The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality will host a public information session and hearing on Dec. 3 in Mead regarding proposed changes at the AltEn LLC solid waste compost facility.

The permit allows the operation of a solid waste composting facility under Nebraska’s solid waste management laws and regulations. The proposed permit modification would allow for additional organic waste and bulking agents from third party sources to be delivered to the site and incorporated into the compost windrows prior to going through the anaerobic digester at the on-site ethanol plant. The property is located approximately 1 ¾ miles south of Mead.

The public hearing will be held at the Community Building, 220 E 4th Street, Mead, and will start at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 3, 2015. A public information session will be held prior to the hearing at the same location from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. The public information session is an open forum and the public is invited to come and visit with NDEQ staff to discuss the proposed modification. At the hearing, the public will have the opportunity to provide formal testimony regarding the proposed modification.

After the hearing, NDEQ will prepare a responsiveness summary addressing the applicable comments submitted during the hearing and comment period. This summary will be mailed to interested citizens.

Copies of the draft permit, legal notice and administrative record are available at the Mead Public Library, 316 Vine, Mead; at the Omaha Field Office, 8901 S 154th S., Ste. 5, Omaha; and at NDEQ’s Lincoln offices at 1200 N Street, Suite 400, The Atrium, Lincoln, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on weekdays.
